Councilman Paul López Receives Recycling Award

Earlier this week, Councilman Paul López, received the “Outstanding Elected Official for Excellence in Recycling Award” by the Colorado Association for Recycling. The awards ceremony was held at the Colorado Summit for Recycling, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado June 6-8, 2010.

“This is truly an honor, but this is a really a victory for District 3 residents as we advance our goals to build healthy West Denver neighborhoods”, López proclaimed. “And we’re not finished yet!”

Over the last two and half years since being elected to office, Councilman López has been leading volunteer “recycling blitzes” in District 3 to sign up residents for recycling containers. The grassroots effort has considerably increased the District’s recycling participation rate which was only at 11 percent in 2007, to the current District 3 recycling participation rate at 33 percent.

“It’s about increasing access to basic city services—even if we have to go door-to-door to get people signed up for recycling—we will do it.”
