Diesel Vehicles
In 2008, the Denver Fleet Management Division secured a hybrid-hydraulic trash truck. The Peterbilt Hybrid Model 320 model utilizes Eaton Corporation’s hydraulic launch assist technology, which is ideally suited for stop-and-go trash collection operations. Hydraulics help launch and slow the unit, so less diesel fuel is consumed and emissions are reduced. Denver has realized a 25% increase in fuel economy with the hybrid-hydraulic trash truck compared to the City’s non-hybrid units.
Denver is also a big user of alternative fuels. The City and County of Denver started using biodiesel in 2004 and now fuels its entire fleet of diesel engine vehicles with biodiesel. The City uses approximately 1.4 million gallons of biodisel annually. Denver also utilizes propane and E85. Denver’s use of these alternative fuels reduces its dependency on foreign oil.
