Denver Recycles Begins Residential Compost Pilot

photo: cart Denver Recycles is asking Denver residents to sign up for a new residential composting pilot program for yard debris, food and soiled paper. The program will test collection services at 3,300 Denver homes. Each home will be provided with a green, 65-gallon composting cart and a small kitchen pail to collect organic material inside the home. Carts will be serviced biweekly through the winter. Too Many Leaves? Recycle Them!

photo: kids and leaves Leaves and other yard wastes account for more than 20 percent of Denver's landfill waste. Try mulching and composting them instead, then recycle any excess leaves at one of five LeafDrop locations on Sundays in November (2, 9 & 16), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bagged leaves will be accepted at two additional sites on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through December 5. The program is open to Denver residents only.

New Statewide Energy Campaign Begins

In June, Governor Ritter and Mayor Hickenlooper kicked off Colorado's statewide energy efficiency campaign, featuring simple steps you can take to save money. Visit the Governor's Energy Office for information, and see other fun videos on the Mayor's YouTube channel.

Recycle Your CFLs at ACE Hardware

photo: fluorescent bulb Coloradans can now drop off used compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and mercury-containing thermostats for free recycling at any Ace Hardware store in the state. The spiral shaped bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and should not be thrown away in the trash. CFLs are also accepted in Denver's Household Hazardous Waste collection program.
