Mayor Hickenlooper Unveils Greenprint Denver Initiative

July 13, 2006

Greenprint Council to Help Shape Sustainability Agenda

(DENVER) During his third annual State of the City Address on Wednesday, Mayor John Hickenlooper focused on issues of sustainability while unveiling the ambitious agenda of the City's Greenprint Denver initiative.

"Denver is almost unique in the nation by having Blueprint Denver - a comprehensive planning document that protects and enhances our neighborhoods," said Hickenlooper during his remarks. "In the same vein, Greenprint Denver will allow us to expand that comprehensive planning approach to our relationship with energy and the environment."

The Greenprint Denver action plan centers around energy and emissions, green building and industry, urban design and transportation, water and the environment, and waste reduction. Details of the plan are available at www.greenprintdenver.org. The full text of the Mayor's State of the City Address is available online.

"By focusing on areas that offer opportunities for local government innovation and regional cooperation, the plan we are unveiling focuses on what we can do today," Hickenlooper said during the State of the City Address. "Even if there's a two percent chance that 95 percent of the world's top climate scientists are right about the dire consequences of global warming, we run the risk of being the first generation in history to leave the next generation a problem for which there is no solution. We must have a sense of urgency to seize the low-hanging fruit that saves taxpayer money, preserves the environment and creates economic opportunity."

During his speech, Hickenlooper attributed Greenprint Denver's vision to the work of many City departments and members of the newly formed Greenprint Council - a leadership group that brings together civic, business and environmental leaders to help shape this sustainability agenda. Leading by example, the Greenprint Council has pledged to operate in a carbon-neutral fashion by conducting low-waste meetings and walking or taking transit to meetings or purchasing annual offsets for their vehicle use in getting to meetings.
