Mayors Make 'Green Bet' On Stanley Cup Playoffs

The Denver Channel, 7 News
April 10, 2008

The Avs Are Up One Game In Series

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper is making a friendly wager with his counterpart in Saint Paul on the Stanley Cup playoff series between the Colorado Avalance and the Minnesota Wild.

In the past, bets have included food or challenges like wearing the opposing teams jersey.

Not this time.

According to the Denver mayor's office, Hickenlooper and Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman have made an environmental "green" wager.

Coleman will plant a Colorado Blue Spruce in front of the Xcel Energy Center prior to the Republican National Convention wearing a Colorado Avalanche jersey if the Avs bury the Wild.

Should the Avs lose, Hickenlooper has agreed to plant a Minnesota native Northwoods Red Maple in front of the Pepsi Center prior to the Democratic National Convention.

The hockey series began Wednesday night with an overtime win for the Avs at the Saint Paul Xcel Energy Center and will come to Denver's Pepsi Center next week.

The 2008 Democratic National Convention will be held at Denver's Pepsi Center, Aug. 25-28. Denver has committed to making the convention the "greenest" convention ever, working with Greenprint Denver on multiple sustainability efforts. Greenprint plans to plant 75,000 trees this year, and planted over 65,000 trees in 2007 in the Denver metro area.

The 2008 Republican National Convention will be held at Saint Paul's Xcel Energy Center, Sept. 1-4.
