Denver urged to "go dark" for an hour Saturday

By: Christopher N. Osher
The Denver Post
March 27, 2008

In keeping with his Greenprint Denver initiative, Mayor John Hickenlooper is urging Denver residents and businesses to switch off lights and nonessential appliances for an hour Saturday.

By doing so, participants will take part in Earth Hour, a global initiative from the World Wildlife Fund, a conservation organization.

The event will occur from 8 to 9 p.m. locally.

Nonessential lights will be turned off in the Wellington Webb Municipal Building and the Minoru Yasui Building. The Colorado Convention Center will participate by turning off most of its exterior lights. The Denver Performing Arts Complex also will join in.

Major local businesses also have decided to participate.

Worldwide, about 30 million people are expected to take part.
