Making Vehicle Power Electronics COOL
Power electronics are expensive, yet critical, components of fuel-saving advanced vehicle powertrains such as hybrid electric vehicles. Power electronics are used to convert, transform and control the flow of electrical energy between batteries and electric motors. However, they don't like the heat. Learn more from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Michael O'Keefe about the role power electronics play in making advanced vehicles possible, ways to reduce their cost, and cutting edge technologies to cool these amazing components. This presentation is part of NREL's "Visitors Center Power Lunch Lecture Series." Participants are welcome to bring a lunch and enjoy.

Rocky Mountain Land Series with Courtney White
Author Courtney White will discuss and sign his latest book, Revolution on the Range: The Rise of a New Ranch in the American West. This thought-provoking book argues that ranchers and environmentalists have more in common than they realize, and that cattle and conservation can go hand in hand. Environmentalist Bill McKibben says, "Community is the most important solution to the environmental crisis we face. When it works, it's the result of hard work and real attempts at understanding. This fine volume is a handbook for that kind of work."

Discover how America and the rest of the world can learn from Iceland's example in this presentation by Chuck Kezar, a professor from Vermont's Lyndon State College and a Retired Colonel from the U.S. Air Force. Kezar spent six years with the Energy Subcommittee of the U.S. House of Representatives' Science Committee, and several years with the U.S. Department of Energy, before moving to strategic defense work. Using data from his research in Iceland, Kezar will demonstrate ways we can move to a renewable energy economy using geothermal resources and smart planning. A reception with refreshments and networking will follow the event. Admission is free for CRES members and only $5 for non-members.
