Nobel Peace Prize Recognizes Climate Threat
The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on October
12 to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and former Vice President Al Gore.
They will share the award for their "efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay
the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change." In the announcement, the Norwegian Nobel Committee cited
the need to protect the world's future climate, stating that "action is necessary now, before climate change moves beyond
man's control."
Urban Forest Banners Mix Art and Sustainability
In October 2007, Denver hosted a unique outdoor exhibition along California Street featuring the work of over 40 Colorado
designers and students. Using the tree as a metaphor for sustainability, designers printed their concepts on a fabric made from
recycled plastic bottles. The artwork will be sold as
tote bags to support Colorado design education initiatives.
Front Range ReDirect Guide Now Available
A "green pages" for the environmentally conscious, the Denver/Boulder/Ft. Collins ReDirect Guide is now
available online, in health
food stores, and by mail. This free directory makes it easy to locate and support Colorado's green businesses.
Categories include eco-travel, natural health and wellness, organic products, green building and materials, renewable energy
technologies, and more.
Spare Change? Feed a Meter
A sustainable city means economic opportunity for all, but not everyone is so fortunate. The next time you're downtown, look for one
of 50 red parking meters that accept spare change for the homeless as part of
Denver's Road Home. Unlike a handout to
a panhandler, your contribution goes directly to long-term solutions for food, shelter and services.
Denver's a Hybrid Hotbed
According to R.L. Polk & Co., which tracks auto sales, Denver recorded 4,954 new hybrid registrations in 2006 - making it the tenth
hottest market in the nation for hybrid vehicles. Rounding out the top ten were: San Francisco, New York, Washington, D.C., Boston,
Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia and San Diego. See the full
story in the Denver Business Journal.
Energy Leaders Form Colorado Coalition
The Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation has announced the launch of the
Colorado Energy Coalition: a consortium of leaders
and stakeholders in Colorado's diverse energy industry whose volunteer efforts will aim to position the region as the "Balanced Energy
Capital of the West" - a dynamic energy economy with vast fossil fuel resources, cutting-edge development in renewables and alternatives,
a highly-skilled workforce, and leadership in conservation and efficiency.
Need Pedal Power? Try Five a Day
Thirty colorful new bike racks featuring designs of fruits and vegetables were installed throughout the Park Hill neighborhood in Fall 2006
to help promote healthy eating and active living among its 30,000 residents. The racks were made possible by the Park Hill
Thriving Communities Initiative, a community-based program funded by
Kaiser Permanente and part of Denver's Healthy People Program.
Southeast Light Rail Now Open
The Regional Transportation District's four new southeast Light Rail
lines - E, F, G and H - opened on November 19, 2006. They connect to
the existing C and D lines at the I-25 and Broadway station, and extend service between Denver, Englewood, Littleton and
Aurora. The system provides 19 miles of new light rail service, 11 new bus routes, 10 new call-n-Rides, 13 new light rail stations,
12 new park-n-Rides and nearly 7,000 new parking spaces.
MDEDC Releases Energy Efficiency Report
The Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation offers a
helpful report,
Energy Efficiency: Bottom Line Opportunities for Metro Denver Companies, which focuses on the short and long-term
savings and operating benefits to businesses of implementing a variety of
energy efficiency measures, with the overall goal of making Denver an energy efficiency model.
Denver Zoo Offers Cell Phone Recycling
Upgrading your cell phone? Recycle your old one at
the Denver Zoo. Through a partnership with Eco-Cell,
the zoo receives funding from your donation, and you
can help minimize the electronic waste in our city's
landfill. Since February 2005, more than 3,000 cell
phones have been recycled, resulting in more than
$5,000 donated to the zoo. In 2006 alone,
1,653 cell phones were recycled - the third highest
amount of all participating institutions.
