The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized Denver Water, the largest utility in Colorado, and the city of Denver for their "bold, forward-thinking water conservation programs," according to an August 6 EPA press release.
The utility and the city also signed a WaterSense partnership agreement with EPA. WaterSense is a voluntary public-private partnership program that promotes the use of water-efficient products and services.
The program is designed to protect future water supplies, the EPA release said. Denver Water in 2006 launched its Tap-Smart initiative, a plan to reduce Denver-area water use by 22 percent by 2016 and to encourage permanent wise water-use practices among all Denver Water customers.
Denver Water's plan for meeting future water needs also was recognized. The utility said growth would be supported by conservation, recycled water and water supply development, the release said.
The city of Denver and Mayor John Hickenlooper were recognized for the GreenPrint Denver program, which promotes water conservation and efficiency.
