Democratic Convention to get 'greener'

The Democratic National Convention got a little greener yesterday with Mayor John Hickenlooper's announcement that several more environmentally friendly events will go on during the political convention.

The Green Frontier Fest is scheduled for Aug. 24, the day before the Democratic National Convention (DNC) kicks off, and will be "a celebration of everyday positive choices that individuals, families and organizations can make now to address global challenges," according to a press release. The environmentally minded event will be held outside at Sculpture Park.

"Denver, the Front Range and Colorado are naturally, culturally and intellectually well positioned to be the U.S. epicenter for a global new energy and sustainable future," said Hickenlooper in a statement. "The city is committed though the leadership provided by our Greenprint Denver program to enhance and accelerate the green ethic of many of our citizens."

Sustainable options

The Frontier Fest will feature a variety of sustainable options, including some cutting-edge renewable technologies. Greenprint Denver, the agency started in 2006 by Hickenlooper that seeks to increase sustainable development in Denver, will play a part in the event.

"With the Green Frontier Fest, we are excited to showcase our existing capacity and accomplishments," said Hickenlooper. "The Fest is also an expression of our community's collaborative effort to set a new local green standard for the Democratic National Convention and for future conventions and elsewhere."

In addition to the Green Frontier Fest, Hickenlooper's office also announced that a "New Energy Station" will be set up at Sculpture Park from Aug. 24-28. The station will consist of displays and applications that focus on green-friendly technologies and practices.

'SmartGridCity Experience'

A mobile exhibit from Xcel Energy called the "SmartGridCity Experience" will be featured at the event. The hands-on display aims to teach the public about the possibility of an electric grid that could be used in the future.

The ReDirect Guide, a free publication that serves as a phonebook for eco-friendly businesses, is partnering with the City and County of Denver to put on the events. Both the fest and the station will be free to attend and will offer activities for all ages.

"The Green Frontier Fest and New Energy Station will provide residents and visitors with environmentally friendly options to live green and healthy, ultimately saving money and resources," said a statement from Sarah Wells, associate publisher of the ReDirect guide. "The Fest is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for green businesses to be involved with the momentum and attention around the Democratic National Convention."
